Best Free Drum Machine VSTs for Mac & Windows (2026)

TapechildComparison18 min read

Most lists of no-cost drum plugins are copied forward from year to year, and some of what they recommend is now paid, discontinued or a trial. This one starts from the developers’ own download pages as they stood in September 2026, keeps only what you can still get without paying, and sorts it by the question that matters most: does the plugin play the pattern, or does your DAW?

Best free drum machine VSTs at a glance

The best free drum machine VST with its own step sequencer is Synsonic Instruments Apollon, an eight-voice virtual analog machine its developer stopped charging for at the start of 2026. Cardinal, the open-source plugin build of VCV Rack, is the no-cost way to synthesize drums and sequence them inside a DAW. If your DAW does the sequencing, Sampleson SUB is the simplest synthesized kit, Sitala 1.0 and Decent Sampler are the sample players to start with, and MT Power Drum Kit 2 covers a real acoustic kit.

Almost every product on this page gives up something a paid one would include: a VST3 build, a stated Apple Silicon version, technical support or an editable sequencer. Those gaps are listed per plugin below rather than left for you to discover after installing.

How we chose

Every entry had to meet four conditions, checked against the developer’s own product page, manual or release listing in September 2026:

  • No payment, no expiry. Trials and time-limited demos are out. Two products are the no-cost tier of a paid one (Triaz Player and SSD 5.5 Free); both are labelled as such.
  • Still downloadable from the developer or its official repository, not only from a mirror site.
  • Runs on a current 64-bit macOS or Windows system. Where the developer does not say whether a Mac build runs natively on Apple Silicon, the table says “not stated” rather than guessing.
  • Makes drums. General-purpose synths qualify only if they ship percussion patches.

We have not run these plugins for this article. What you read below is developer documentation, collected and compared, plus our own explanation of how each design works. Things change quickly with free software, so check the linked page before building a template around any of them.

Left off, and why: Sitala 2 now needs a $20 licence, though version 1.0 is still offered without charge (below). TAL-Drum is a paid sampler with a one-kit demo. Loopcloud DRUM needs a Loopcloud subscription or a purchase. Spitfire LABS now redirects to Splice’s INSTRUMENT platform, so we left it out until the change settles. Groove Agent SE comes with Cubase rather than as a standalone download. EZdrummer 3 has a 10-day trial, not a free version. The VCV Rack 2 plugin is the paid Pro edition.

Which free drum plugin should you get?

Start with who owns the pattern. A drum machine, in the sense our what is a drum machine explainer uses, is a sound source plus a sequencer; many no-cost plugins keep only the first half and leave timing to your piano roll. After that, the choice is synthesis or recordings, and for recordings, electronic or acoustic.

Decision chart. Start: do you want to write patterns in the plugin? Yes, and it must load in the DAW: Apollon, Cardinal, Instant; standalone is fine: Hydrogen, VCV Rack 2 Free. No: choose synthesis (whole kit: SUB, MiniSpillage; one drum: ChowKick, BD-808-PRO, BDE-01, Surge XT) or samples (electronic: Sitala 1.0, Decent Sampler, DR-84, Triaz Player; acoustic: MT Power Drum Kit 2, SSD 5.5 Free, BFD Player).
Three questions narrow eighteen no-cost drum plugins to two or three: who sequences, synthesis or samples, and electronic or acoustic. · Diagram: Tapechild

Free drum machines with a step sequencer

This is the thinnest group, because a sequencer that syncs reliably to every host is expensive to build and support. Six options qualify, and two of them run outside the DAW.

Synsonic Instruments Apollon

Apollon plugin window. The top half holds eight channel strips (bass drum, snare, low and high tom, closed and open hat, clap, rimshot) with tune, decay and send knobs; the bottom half is a 16-step grid with one row per voice and a shuffle slider for each.
Apollon pairs eight synthesized voices with a 16-step, velocity-sensitive sequencer that syncs to the host. · Image: Synsonic Instruments Apollon · Source

Apollon is the closest thing on this list to a classic analog rhythm box in plugin form. It has eight voices — bass drum, snare, low tom, high tom, closed hat, open hat, clap and rimshot — each synthesized rather than sampled, with its own tuning, decay and level, plus reverb and delay sends. Under them sits a 16-step sequencer with velocity-sensitive steps, per-track shuffle and sync to the DAW’s tempo, and every voice can also be played from MIDI.

Synsonic charged for Apollon until early 2026 and now gives it away, along with its two kick synths, but its site says the free products come without technical support. Formats are the weak point: VST2 and AU on the Mac, VST2 only on Windows, 64-bit hosts, and no VST3. If your host loads only VST3 or CLAP, Apollon will not appear in it; on a Mac, the AU version is the way round that.

Cardinal (DISTRHO)

A Cardinal patch: a Host Time module on the left sends transport cables into two Grid Seq sequencers, which trigger two Macro Oscillator 2 modules routed through reverbs into Host Audio outputs.
In Cardinal, the DAW transport arrives as a module (Host Time), so a patched sequencer follows the project tempo. · Image: DISTRHO Cardinal · Source

Cardinal is VCV Rack’s code packaged as a self-contained, open-source plugin: VST2, VST3, AU, CLAP and LV2, with a universal macOS build, Windows and Linux. It does not load outside modules; its project site counts 1,382 built-in modules from 84 brands, and among them are everything needed for a drum machine — sequencers, dedicated drum voices such as Befaco’s Kickall and the WSTD-Drums set, and Macro Oscillator 2, the Rack version of Mutable Instruments Plaits, whose manual describes three percussion models built on simulations of classic drum machine circuits.

That makes it the one no-cost option that synthesizes drums and sequences them inside a DAW project. The trade is the learning curve of modular patching, and the builds are unsigned, so macOS and Windows will warn you on install. CLAP support is marked as a work in progress in the README.

A three-voice drum machine in Cardinal

Cardinal Synth on an instrument track · modules named as they appear in the browser

  1. Insert Cardinal Synth on an instrument track. It is the variant registered as an instrument, with two audio outputs.
  2. Add Host Time. Its outputs follow the DAW transport, so the patch starts, stops and resets with the project.
  3. Add SEQ-3, an eight-step sequencer, for each voice. Patch a Host Time clock output into its Clock input and Host Time Reset into its Reset input.
  4. Add Macro Oscillator 2 and select the first of its three percussion models, the analog bass drum. Patch SEQ-3’s Trigger output to its TRIG input and its OUT to Host Audio.
  5. Repeat with the snare model and the metallic percussion model for the other two voices, then switch steps on in each SEQ-3 row.

Per the Mutable Instruments manual, MORPH sets decay time in all three percussion models, while HARMONICS and TIMBRE shape tone: on the bass drum, attack sharpness with overdrive, and brightness.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen main window: a song timeline of named patterns at the top, a pattern editor grid below with rows for kick, stick, snare, toms, hats and cymbals, and a floating mixer with per-instrument faders.
Hydrogen arranges patterns on a song timeline above a per-instrument pattern editor, much like a hardware drum machine’s song mode. Screenshot from an earlier 1.2 release. · Image: Hydrogen · Source

Hydrogen answers the “free software drum machine” search more literally than any plugin: an open-source (GPLv2+) drum machine application for macOS 10.14 and later, 64-bit Windows and Linux, at version 1.2.6 since July 2025. It is sample-based, loading drumkits of recorded hits, and has the structure of a hardware machine — a pattern editor per instrument, patterns arranged into songs, a mixer with effects, humanize controls for velocity and timing.

It is not a plugin. You can play its kits from MIDI, follow a JACK transport on systems that use JACK, or write the whole song in Hydrogen and export it as audio or as a MIDI file. For someone without a DAW, or who wants a dedicated drum-programming window, that is a feature.

VCV Rack 2 Free

The upstream of Cardinal, and the version most tutorials use. The free edition is open source, runs as a standalone application on macOS (including Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux, ships with 30-plus built-in modules including the SEQ-3 sequencer, and can add free modules from the VCV Library, where Befaco and Audible Instruments, the source of Macro Oscillator 2, are free and open source. Running it as a plugin requires Rack Pro at $149 or a VCV+ subscription. Choose Rack over Cardinal when you want the library’s newest modules; choose Cardinal when you want the patch saved inside your DAW session.

TerminalVST Instant

A new and deliberately narrow sequencer plugin, announced in June 2026: one sound per instance, chosen from four categories — clap, snare, closed hat or open hat — with a factory library or your own WAV and AIFF files. The sequencer is the point: 1 to 32 steps, per-step velocity, micro-timing, shuffle and parameter locks on pitch, filters, shape and reverse, and the finished loop drags into the DAW as audio at project tempo. VST3 and AU on macOS and Windows, with no activation. There is no kick category, so it is a way to program hats and claps over a kick from something else.

Wave Alchemy Triaz Player

The no-cost tier of Wave Alchemy’s paid Triaz, and labelled here as such. It includes 4,000 samples and 200 presets with patterns, in VST3, AU and AAX with native Apple Silicon support. What is locked matters for this list: sequencer pages cannot be edited, you cannot load your own samples, and the sound browser is disabled. You can still drag a preset’s pattern out as MIDI and edit it in your DAW. Treat it as a well-produced electronic kit library with grooves attached, not as an open drum machine.

Free drum synthesizers

A drum synth builds each hit from oscillators, noise and envelopes when the note arrives, so pitch and decay stay continuous instead of stepping between recordings. Our best drum synth plugins guide covers the paid field; these are the no-cost ones that were available in September 2026.

Sampleson SUB

Sampleson SUB panel: sixteen channel strips from bass drum to clave, each with pan and level and a few with click, tone, snap, pitch or decay, plus sub pitch, sub decay and sub gain knobs for the bass drum.
SUB keeps editing to a knob or two per voice, plus a separate sub-oscillator layer for the bass drum. · Image: Sampleson SUB · Source

A whole analog-style kit in one small panel, about 35 MB installed. Sampleson describes 18 synthesized sounds and a sub-frequency oscillator; the panel shows sixteen voices from bass drum to clave, each with pan and level and a few with one or two tone controls, plus pitch, decay and gain for the bass drum’s sub layer. It states plainly that there is no sequencer. VST, AU and standalone for 64-bit Windows and macOS, with the developer listing Catalina to Monterey. The shallow editing is the limit: this is a kit you play, not one you design.

ChowKick (Chowdhury DSP)

ChowKick interface: a Pulse Shape section with width, amplitude, decay, sustain and noise controls on the left, a Resonant Filter section with frequency, Q, damping, tight, bounce and tone on the right, and a keyboard below.
ChowKick follows the TR-808 kick circuit’s structure: a shaped pulse strikes a resonant filter, and the filter’s ringing is the drum. · Image: ChowKick · Source

An open-source (BSD 3-clause) kick synthesizer modelled on the structure of the TR-808 bass drum: MIDI fires a pulse of adjustable width, amplitude, decay and sustain, optional noise is added, and the pulse strikes a nonlinear resonant filter tunable from 30 to 500 Hz. The project cites Kurt Werner’s doctoral research on the 808 kick circuit as its inspiration. Tight and Bounce bend the filter’s response with level, which is where the punch and the pitch drop come from, and Link makes the filter follow incoming MIDI notes so the kick plays in key.

A reasonable starting point for a long 808-style kick is Link on, Damping turned down for a longer ring, Noise Amount at zero, and notes tuned to roughly 49 to 55 Hz (G1 to A1 in scientific pitch notation); raise Tight to firm up the attack. Formats are VST, VST3, AU and LV2 on Windows, macOS and Linux, and ChowDSP states its Mac plugins are universal binaries. The latest release, 1.2.0, dates from January 2023.

Synsonic BD-808-PRO and BDE-01

Apollon’s two siblings, both unlocked with an activation key Synsonic publishes on each product page. BD-808-PRO emulates the 808 bass drum and adds compression, overdrive and glide, with velocity able to drive accent, decay, drive and tone, so it doubles as a sliding 808 bass. It has the widest format support of the three: VST2 and VST3 on Windows, plus AU on the Mac. BDE-01 is a more open kick designer, with a body section (pitch and amplitude envelopes, a harmonic enhancer) and a second layer for a click, filtered noise or a sample; VST2 and AU on the Mac, VST2 on Windows.

AudioSpillage MiniSpillage (Mac only)

Three synthesis models from the larger DrumSpillage — a single-oscillator bass drum with pitch sweep and internal FM, a wood drum model that reaches from log drums to toms, and a six-oscillator hi-hat with noise and dual resonant filters — plus distortion and filters. Version 1.3.2 is a Mac Audio Unit; there is nothing for Windows.

Surge XT

Not a drum instrument, but a no-cost, open-source synth deep enough to make one: VST3, AU, CLAP, LV2 and standalone, universal on macOS, and available for Windows and Linux. Its factory bank has a Percussion folder of nine patches (kicks, a tight snare, three synth toms and others) that are better read as starting points. Where it earns a place is FM and ring-modulated metallic hits, which dedicated kick synths do not attempt. It needs one instance per drum.

Free drum samplers and kit players

Samplers are where the no-cost field is strongest, because the engine is simple and the value is in the sounds you load. For sounds to load, our free sample packs are royalty-free WAV one-shots and loops, and the AI sample generator renders a drum one-shot from a text description in the browser.

Decomposer Sitala 1.0

Sitala 1.0 window with a snare waveform in the editor, shape, compression, tuning, tone, volume and pan knobs to its right, and a row of sixteen named pads from snare to rim shot below.
Sitala 1.0 gives each of its sixteen pads six controls: shape, compression, tuning, tone, volume and pan. · Screenshot: Decomposer · Source

The sampler most lists still call free is now two products. Sitala 2 needs a $20 licence; Decomposer keeps Sitala 1.0 (build 1.0.9, February 2021) available at no cost, as standalone, VST, AU and AAX for macOS 10.10 and later, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows, and Ubuntu Linux. Version 1.0 has sixteen pads, drag-and-drop loading and six controls per pad, and nothing else to learn. Decomposer states native Apple Silicon support for the current version but not for 1.0, and a five-year-old build is the kind of thing a future macOS can break.

Decent Sampler

Decent Sampler playing the Univox JR-5 library: a photo of the wooden drum machine fills the panel, with a keyboard below where red keys hold the recreated rhythms and blue keys the single hits.
Each Decent Sampler library draws its own interface; this one maps the Univox JR-5’s rhythms and single hits to separate key zones. · Screenshot: Decent Samples · Source

A no-cost player for sample libraries built in its own format, in VST, VST3, AU, AAX and standalone for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and Windows, VST, VST3 and standalone on Linux, and an AUv3 app on iOS. The reason it belongs on a drum machine list is the library ecosystem: Decent Samples’ own free Univox JR-5 library, for example, samples all five sounds of that machine with three round robins each and recreates its ten preset rhythms on the left-hand keys. There is no sequencer unless a library builds pattern playback in.

Pepto Audio DR-84

Pepto Audio DR-84: sixteen channel strips with pitch, pan and trim knobs and a fader each, output selectors below, sixteen trigger pads, and low-pass, reverb and master volume controls.
DR-84 gives every drum a pitch, pan, trim and output setting, so a kit can be split across mixer channels. · Image: Pepto Audio DR-84 · Source

A 1980s drum machine rompler from a one-person developer: fourteen kits, six of them from drum machines (the developer names the LinnDrum, Roland TR-707, E-mu Drumulator, Oberheim DMX and Yamaha RX11), one from the Simmons SDS-V module, four hybrids and three synthwave kits. The machine samples are left unprocessed. Each drum has pitch, pan, trim and an output assignment, with a low-pass filter and reverb on the master. VST, VST3 and AU for 64-bit Windows and macOS. Downloads are hosted on Mega and Google Drive, and only the version without an installer is still offered, so expect to copy the plugin into your plugin folder by hand. Our 808 vs 909 article explains why sampled machines like these keep coming back.

Free acoustic drum VSTs

Search for a free drum VST and most results mean a sampled acoustic kit rather than a drum machine. If a real-sounding kit under a song is what you need, these three are current, cost nothing and come from established developers.

MT Power Drum Kit 2

MT Power Drum Kit 2 main view: a rendered acoustic rock kit with kick, snare, two rack toms, floor tom and cymbals on a rug, with Mixer, play and Grooves buttons along the bottom.
MT Power Drum Kit 2 is a single sampled rock kit with a mixer and a groove library behind the buttons at the bottom. · Image: MT Power Drum Kit 2 · Source

One multisampled rock kit with a mixer that includes compressors, and a groove library of thousands of rhythms with a tool for generating fills. VST, AU and AAX; the developer lists Windows from Vista to 11 and macOS from 10.5, on Intel or Apple Silicon. No account is mentioned on the download page, which makes it the fastest of the three to get running.

Steven Slate Drums 5.5 Free

The no-cost tier of SSD 5.5: a fully functioning, never-expiring demo of the player with one Deluxe 2 kit, a processed Slate snare and three kit presets. It needs a free Steven Slate Audio account to install and activate. Pick it when you want a kit that already sounds mixed; the rest of the SSD library is paid.

BFD Player

BFD Drums’ free player includes a core kit library and 340 grooves played by drummers, searchable by genre and tempo, plus a mixer. It needs macOS Ventura or later (Intel or Apple Silicon) or Windows 22H2 or later, about 2 GB of disk (5.25 GB with all content) and an internet connection to authorize. It is the heaviest install here and the most complete acoustic option.

Stock DAW drum machines worth knowing

Before installing anything, check what your DAW already includes. None of these travels to another host, but each is maintained with the DAW and costs nothing extra.

Ableton Live

Drum Rack and Drum Sampler are in every edition, Intro included. The Drum Synths devices (kick, snare, clap, tom and others, all synthesized) come with Standard and Suite.

Logic Pro and GarageBand

Logic has Drum Machine Designer, a Drum Synth instrument and a Step Sequencer. GarageBand for Mac has Drummer, whose virtual players include electronic kits as well as acoustic ones.

FL Studio

The Channel Rack is a step sequencer by design, so any sample or synth in FL is already a drum machine voice; FPC adds MPC-style pads.

Where free drum plugins fall short

Reading eighteen product pages side by side shows a pattern the individual listings hide. Only Cardinal and Instant pair a real sequencer with a VST3 build, and Instant has no kick. Apple Silicon support is stated for fewer than half. Synsonic’s three plugins come without technical support by design, two downloads are unsigned or have no installer, and one kick synth has not had a release since early 2023. None of that makes these tools bad; it makes them things to keep a backup plan for, which is why rendering the drums you like to audio is a good habit with any of them.

If you outgrow them, the paid comparison in our best drum machine VST guide covers the step-sequencer machines, emulations and samplers, and best drum synth plugins covers synthesis engines — including our own UDS-16, a paid drum synth with no sequencer of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free drum machine available?

Yes. Synsonic Instruments Apollon is a free eight-voice analog-style drum machine plugin with a 16-step sequencer, Cardinal is a free open-source modular plugin that can be patched into a synthesized drum machine, and Hydrogen is a free standalone drum machine application for macOS, Windows and Linux. All three were available from their developers in September 2026.

What is the best free drum machine VST?

For a plugin that sequences its own patterns, Apollon is the most complete free choice, with the caveat that it has no VST3 build. If your DAW handles the sequencing, Sampleson SUB is the simplest free synthesized kit and Sitala 1.0 or Decent Sampler are the free samplers to start with. The decision chart above narrows it by workflow.

Is there a free version of EZdrummer?

No. Toontrack sells EZdrummer 3 and offers a free, fully functional 10-day trial through its Product Manager, but there is no permanent free edition. For a free acoustic kit that does not expire, MT Power Drum Kit 2, SSD 5.5 Free and BFD Player are the current options.

Do free drum plugins work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Many do, but not all developers say so. Cardinal, VCV Rack 2 Free, ChowKick, Surge XT, Decent Sampler, Triaz Player, MT Power Drum Kit 2 and BFD Player state native Apple Silicon support. For Apollon and the other Synsonic plugins, SUB, DR-84, Instant, MiniSpillage and Sitala 1.0, the developer pages do not say, so check before relying on them in a project.

What is the best free drum synth VST?

For a whole kit, Sampleson SUB is the simplest free drum synth for Mac and Windows. For kicks, ChowKick models the TR-808 bass drum circuit and is open source, and Synsonic’s BD-808-PRO emulates the 808 kick with glide for bass lines. Cardinal goes furthest, since its drum modules can be combined into any kit you can patch.
