Best Drum Machine VST Plugins in 2026 (Free & Paid)

“Drum machine VST” covers three different kinds of drum plugin that share a format: software copies of specific hardware, samplers with a step sequencer bolted on, and drum synthesizers that generate every hit from scratch. Which one to buy — or download for nothing — depends on whether you want a machine to compose inside, or a sound to play from your DAW.
The short answer
If you want one plugin that behaves like a classic drum machine — voices plus a step sequencer in the same window — Sonic Charge Microtonic is the compact choice and XLN Audio XO is the sample-based one. If you want the best free drum machine VST, Sitala 1.0 is a no-cost drum sampler that runs on every platform (Sitala 2 is a paid upgrade), and Decent Sampler is the free host for hundreds of free drum libraries. If you want vintage and analog character, the choice is between a faithful emulation (Roland Cloud TR-808, D16 Nepheton 2) and a drum synth that gives you a circuit’s behaviour without its catalogue of famous sounds.
What counts as a drum machine VST
A hardware drum machine is two things in one box: a set of voices and a sequencer that fires them. Software splits the pair: some plugins keep both, some keep only the voices and leave timing to the DAW, and stores file all of them under one heading. Every plugin below belongs to one of three families.
Hardware emulation
A software model of a specific machine — a TR-808, a 909, a LinnDrum. The voices are circuit models or multisamples of the real unit, and the sequencer usually copies the original workflow. You buy these for a sound you already know.
Sampler with a sequencer
Pads that play WAV files, plus a step grid. The sound depends entirely on the samples you load. Flexible, cheap, and the reason most free “drum machine” plugins are really samplers.
Drum synthesizer
Each hit is generated from oscillators, noise and envelopes when the note arrives. No sample library and no fixed catalogue of sounds; the character comes from the engine. Some include a sequencer, many do not.
The line between the first and third family is thinner than it looks. An 808 emulation is a drum synthesizer — the original had no samples — but one locked to a particular circuit. Our guide to how drum synthesis works covers the engines, and analog drum machines covers the hardware most of these plugins are chasing. (“VST” in search queries just means “plugin”; nearly everything below also ships as AU, and most as AAX.)

Best paid drum machine VSTs
Ordered roughly from the most literal hardware copies to the most open-ended instruments. Prices are bands, not quotes — most of these go on sale several times a year.
Roland Cloud TR-808 and TR-909

The official ones. Roland models its own circuits with the Analog Circuit Behavior technology from its Boutique hardware, and the plugins reproduce the original panels down to the step buttons. That is the appeal and the limitation in one sentence: you get the reference 808 and 909 sounds and the original sequencer workflow, plus a few extras the hardware never had — wider tuning and decay ranges, built-in effects — but the design goal is fidelity, not range. Both are sold through Roland Cloud, inside a subscription tier or as a one-off Lifetime Key for a single instrument. VST3, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
D16 Group Nepheton 2 and Drumazon 2

D16 was modelling the 808 and 909 before Roland did, and the second generation of both plugins is the most complete third-party take. Nepheton 2 covers the 808, Drumazon 2 the Roland TR-909, each with a full step sequencer, pattern chaining, per-voice outputs and parameters that go well past the original knobs — tuning on voices the hardware fixed, decay on the closed hat. The sequencers are the reason to pick these over a sample pack: flam, accent, shuffle and the way a 909 ride sits against the hat are performance behaviours, not sounds. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
AudioRealism ADM

ADM — the Abbey Drum Machine — puts modelled 808, 909 and 606 voices into one plugin with one sequencer, which is a more practical layout than three separate emulations if you mix machines in a single kit. AudioRealism is best known for its 303 emulation, and the same priority runs through ADM: sequencer feel over interface polish. It is the value pick among the emulations. You lose some per-machine depth against D16 and gain a 606 in the same kit. VST and AU on macOS and Windows.
XLN Audio XO

XO is a drum sampler that solves the problem samplers create: finding the right hit among thousands. It scans every drum sample on your drive and lays the results out as a cloud of dots grouped by similarity, so a kick that sounds like the one you have sits next to it. Around that browser sits an eight-track step sequencer with swing and probability. If you already own more drum samples than you can audition, XO is the drum machine plugin that pays for itself fastest. Top price band; VST, VST3, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
Sonic Charge Microtonic

Eight channels of drum synthesis, one pattern sequencer, no samples, and an interface that has barely changed in almost two decades. Each channel is an oscillator, a noise source, two envelopes and a filter, and it does dry, precise electronic kits and gritty ones equally well; patterns drag out to the DAW as MIDI. It is the best answer to “I want a drum machine, not a sampler, and I want to compose in it”. The trade is that it chases no specific hardware — a Microtonic 808 kick is a Microtonic kick. Mid price band, VST and AU on macOS and Windows.
Wave Alchemy Revolution

The sample-based route to vintage hardware, done seriously. Revolution is built on multisamples of real 808, 909, 606, 707 and other classic machines, captured at multiple settings and through a range of preamps and tape, then arranged inside Kontakt with a step sequencer, humanisation and mix controls. Against an emulation you lose continuous control — decay and tune step between captured points — and gain recordings of the actual units, coloured by real gear. It runs inside Kontakt, so check which version of the player it needs.
Sugar Bytes DrumComputer

A hybrid: eight voices that each stack a synthesized layer, a resonator or sample layer and a noise layer, driven by a sequencer built around generative tools — per-step randomisation, modulation lanes and a dice control that produces usable variations rather than noise. DrumComputer is less a classic drum machine than a drum design environment with a sequencer attached. Mid price band; VST, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
Arturia Spark 2

Arturia’s do-everything drum workstation: sample playback, its own synthesis engines and modelled vintage machines in the same kit, a 64-step sequencer with song mode, a modular effects page and a large library of kits across genres. If you want one drum plugin that could be the only one you own, this is it; if you want a focused tool, it is a lot of interface. Top price band; VST, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
The DAW-native option: Before buying anything, check what your DAW already ships. Ableton Live’s Drum Rack, Logic Pro’s Drum Machine Designer and FL Studio’s FPC are pad-based drum samplers with the sequencer provided by the host. None travels between DAWs, but for sample-based work they are often all you need.
Best free drum machine VSTs
Free drum machine plugins are almost all samplers, because sample playback is easy to give away and a good synthesis engine is not. Everything here was free at the time of writing, and our best free drum machine VST guide goes further into the no-cost options.
Sitala (Decomposer)

Sixteen pads, drag a sample onto each, tune, shape and compress it, done. Sitala is the drum sampler most free lists agree on, because it is fast, small and available as VST, AU, AAX and standalone on macOS, Windows and Linux. The free version is 1.0; Sitala 2, at the time of writing, needs a $20 licence. There is no sequencer; you play it from the DAW.
Decent Sampler

A free sample player that exists to host libraries built in its own format, and a large community has built drum kits for it — including a fair number of multisampled vintage drum machines. It has no sequencer. VST, VST3, AU and AAX on macOS, Windows and Linux. If you want free 808 and 909 samples inside a playable instrument rather than as loose WAVs, this is the shortest route.
MiniSpillage (AudioSpillage)

The one free drum synth on this list, and macOS-only. MiniSpillage is the cut-down sibling of DrumSpillage, with three synthesis models — a bass drum, a wooden drum and a hi-hat — and no samples anywhere. Audio Unit only, so Logic, Live and Reaper on a Mac are fine and Windows users are out of luck.
Sampleson SUB

A free, compact synthesized drum module aimed at low-end percussion: kicks, subs and toms built from oscillators rather than replayed. Too narrow to build a whole kit from, but a useful free source of tuned, sample-free kick drums. VST and AU on macOS and Windows.
MT Power Drum Kit 2 — the acoustic exception

Not a drum machine in any electronic sense: a multisampled acoustic rock kit with a groove library and a built-in mixer. It is here because it is free and good, and if what you actually need is a real-sounding kit under a demo, it beats every electronic option above. VST, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows.
Vintage and retro drum machine VSTs
Search for a retro drum machine VST and the results are the same five machines: the TR-808, the TR-909, the CR-78, the LinnDrum and the Oberheim DMX. That reflects the records, not the hardware that existed. There are three ways to get those sounds in software.
| Approach | How it works | Best for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emulation | A circuit model or dense multisample of one specific unit | Getting the 808 or 909; matching a reference track | Sounds only like that machine, and everyone with the plugin has the same kit |
| Sample pack | Recordings of the hardware, loaded into any sampler | Speed, cost, working inside a DAW-native drum rack | Fixed decay and tune per file; no sequencer feel |
| Drum synth with character | An engine modelled on a circuit but not locked to one sound catalogue | Analog-style hits that are not another 808 | Will not give you the famous presets by name |
For the Roland and Linn machines the emulation route is mature; the plugins above cover every famous unit, and the LinnDrum and DMX are well served by multisample libraries. The gap is everything not made in Japan or California. Soviet factories built drum synthesizers through the 1980s — the Lel UDS, the Formanta Rockton and others — with circuits that sound like nothing in the Roland catalogue, and almost none of it has been modelled. Our history of Soviet drum machines covers the hardware; the section below covers the one software attempt we know of, because it is ours.
Tapechild UDS-16

UDS-16 is a 16-voice drum synthesizer plugin with four models: UDS-1987, a circuit model of the Soviet Lel UDS channel; UDS-1988, a later revision of the same design; UDS-16, Tapechild’s own engine; and ROKTON, built from Formanta Rockton schematics. Every hit is synthesized when the note arrives — there is no sample library. It includes Tape and Gated Reverb effects, 40 presets and up to 4x oversampling, and runs as VST3, AU and standalone on macOS 11 and later (Universal) and Windows 10 and 11. One-time purchase of $49, three machine activations, 14-day refund.
It has no step sequencer. Timing comes entirely from the DAW: you write notes in the piano roll or play pads, exactly as you would with a sampler. That is deliberate — the hardware it models had no sequencer either — but it makes UDS-16 the wrong plugin for anyone whose picture of a drum machine is a row of sixteen step buttons.
Who it is for
Producers who already sequence drums in the DAW and want an analog-style kit that does not sound like the same 808 everyone else owns. Anyone who wants the Soviet circuits specifically, because nobody else has rebuilt them.
Who it is not for
Anyone who wants an 808 or 909 clone — buy Roland Cloud or D16. Anyone who wants to compose patterns inside the plugin — buy Microtonic or XO. Anyone who needs a sample player.
Drum machine VST vs free drum samples
For a lot of tracks the honest answer to “which drum machine plugin” is “none”. If you want a boom bap kit or a loop to chop, a folder of good WAVs in your DAW’s own drum rack is faster than any plugin. We publish free sample packs for exactly that case — the free hip hop drum loops and free boom bap drums are the two most downloaded — all royalty-free WAV.
A plugin earns its place when the sound needs to move: decay that follows velocity, pitch that changes across a fill, a hat that opens gradually rather than switching between two files. If your drums stay the same for four bars at a time, samples win. If you keep automating the drum bus to get life into it, you wanted an instrument.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best drum machine VST?
There is no single best, because the category mixes three product types. For a self-contained drum machine with its own sequencer and no samples, Sonic Charge Microtonic is the standard pick; for a sample-based machine, XLN Audio XO; for a faithful 808 or 909, Roland Cloud’s own plugins or D16 Nepheton 2 and Drumazon 2. Decide first whether you want to sequence inside the plugin or in your DAW.
Is there a free drum machine VST?
Yes, though most free ones are samplers rather than synthesizers. Sitala 1.0 is a free 16-pad drum sampler for macOS, Windows and Linux (Sitala 2 is paid); Decent Sampler is a free host for community-built drum libraries, including multisampled vintage machines; MiniSpillage is a free three-voice drum synth for macOS only. All three were free at the time of writing, and none has a step sequencer.
What is the best 808 VST?
For the most literal 808, Roland Cloud TR-808 is the official circuit model and D16 Nepheton 2 is the deepest third-party one, with a sequencer and parameter ranges beyond the hardware. AudioRealism ADM bundles an 808 with a 909 and 606 in one plugin, and Wave Alchemy Revolution multisamples the real unit through outboard gear. For trap-style long 808 basses, most producers use a sampler or a sub synth rather than an 808 emulation.
Do drum machine plugins have a sequencer?
Many do and many do not — it is the most important thing to check before buying. Hardware emulations (Roland Cloud, D16, ADM) and workstation-style instruments (XO, Microtonic, Spark 2, DrumComputer) include a step sequencer. Most free samplers and most drum synthesizers — Sitala, Decent Sampler, MiniSpillage, Tapechild UDS-16 — have none and are played from the DAW.
Can a VST sound like a real analog drum machine?
Close enough that, in a finished mix, the difference is rarely audible. Modern circuit models reproduce the tuning drift, envelope shapes and interaction between voices that made the hardware distinctive, and multisample libraries capture the actual units through real preamps. What software cannot copy is the behaviour of one ageing unit on one day, and that is rarely the part that matters.
